Josh is a 12 year old boy with a specific learning disability in reading and writing, otherwise known as dyslexia. His IQ is average. He has the additional comorbid diagnoses of Attention Deficit Hyper Activity Disorder combined type (ADHD), Autism Spectrum Disorder (PDD NOS), Speech Language Impairment (expressive/receptive language), and Processing Disorders (visual - yeah, he’s dyslexic, central auditory, sensory).
According to experts his disabilities should not interfere with his ability to learn if proper accommodations and methods are used.
Josh has been a public school student since pre-kindergarten. Unfortunately, he has yet to learn how to read beyond a first grade level. The impact on his self-esteem and self worth has been horrible. “Mom, why is everybody at school better than me at everything”. Every subject requires reading. Just imagine how you would feel! There are programs available which have been scientifically proven to address the needs of individuals with Josh’s disabilities.
The school system has been reluctant to provide the expert recommended services and accommodations. This is our journey to ensure Josh an appropriate education.
Josh has one older sister, two younger sisters and a younger brother.
